Categories: Click Here to Subscribe to our RSS Feed Exxon Mobil The largest US-based oil company, ExxonMobil was created in late-1999 by the combination of the former Exxon and Mobil oil companies…which shared a common heritage as former operating units a century ago of the first giant oil trust, Standard Oil. The Standard Oil Trust was created over several decades by the original John D. Rockefeller and his associates in the 19th Century, after oil was discovered in Pennsylvania and a range of activities was pursued by the Standard Oil operating companies and affiliates – including exploration, drilling, refining, processing, shipping, marketing (wholesale and retail), all among the range of vertically-integrated operations of this former industrial giant. In time, Standard Oil (and other trusts) got so big and powerful – and so dominant as market forces – that the “trust-busters” of the Federal and state goverments went after the companies (and broke up the trusts as response to widespread negative public opinion). “S.O.” was divided into numerous companies, including “Esso,” later Exxon; and Mobil, which began as “Standard Oil Co of New York” (or “Socony,” with the familiar logo of the flying horse, Pegasus). Like that other busted-up trust – American Telephone & Telegraph, or “Ma Bell,” the companies are joining up again. And so, in one of the largest mergers in recent years, Exxon and Mobil combined forces to create what in part is a “re-constituted” Standard Oil. (Not called that, of course!) And what was inevitable is that a company this large, and powerful, and involved in so many U.S. and global operations, would attract both supporters (investors and money managers who’ve done well) and critics (those who don’t like “Big Oil” especially included). Exxon has been a prominent corporate poster child for environmentalists since the company’s disastrous Alaskan “Exxon Valdez” oil spill of two decades ago – the lawsuits go on and on and on. Also, the former chairman drew tremendous shareholder fire for his apparent “who-cares-what-you-think” attitude toward the company’s owners. (Exxon annual meetings were always fun for journalists to cover.)
